What changes the price

- Code reading or real diagnosis
- Reading a fault code takes two minutes. Understanding why that code appeared can take hours. A code names a symptom, not a part to replace.
- Time required
- Diagnosis is normally billed by time. An intermittent fault — the one that never appears in front of the mechanic — takes the longest to pin down.
- Credit against the repair
- Many garages deduct some or all of the diagnostic fee if you have the work done with them. Worth asking when comparing.
When an inspection is needed
A flashing check engine light, as opposed to a steady one, usually means a problem worth stopping for — continuing to drive can damage the catalytic converter.
