Common symptoms
- A dull thud or clunk going over a bump
- The vehicle keeps bouncing after a speed bump
- Soft handling, noticeable body roll in corners
- Vague steering, or the wheel is not straight
- Uneven tire wear
- One corner of the vehicle sits visibly lower
You do not need to know which one applies: describe what you notice and the garage will do the diagnosis.
What changes the price
We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.
- Which part
- A shock, a complete strut assembly, a control arm and a ball joint need neither the same parts nor the same labour. An accurate diagnosis changes the estimate entirely.
- In pairs or singly
- Suspension parts are usually replaced in pairs across an axle so the vehicle stays balanced. That doubles the parts, though not always the labour.
- Corrosion
- Road salt effectively welds bolts in place. On a vehicle that has seen several winters here, disassembly takes longer, and that is a real cost factor.
- Alignment afterwards
- Replacing a control arm, ball joint or tie rod changes the geometry, so an alignment is needed after. Check whether the quote includes it.
When an inspection is needed
A suspension noise is hard to pin down without lifting the vehicle. If you hear something but do not know what, ask for a suspension inspection rather than a part — it avoids paying for a replacement that does not fix the noise.

Common questions
Shocks or struts — what is the difference?
A strut is a structural part of the suspension that carries the weight of the vehicle; a shock only damps movement. Many modern vehicles use struts at the front and shocks at the rear, which is why the two axles can be priced very differently.
Can I keep driving on worn suspension?
Worn suspension lengthens braking distances and wears tires faster. A pronounced clunk or play in the steering should be checked promptly — some parts, such as a ball joint, can fail outright.
How does FixMyCarQuote work?
You describe the repair your vehicle needs — it takes a few minutes. Our team looks for garages able to do the work and passes them your request. You compare the offers that come back and choose. It is free and there is no obligation.
Do you cover my area?
Give us your postal code and we will look for garages in your area able to do the work. Availability depends on where you are, the repair, and which garages have capacity when you ask — if we find no one, we will tell you plainly.
What we don't promise
We don't guarantee a number of offers, a response time, or a saving. We pass your request to garages and show you what they say. If nothing comes back, we'll tell you.
