What does a brake replacement cost?

What changes the price

We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.

Pads alone, or pads and rotors
The single largest factor. Rotors can sometimes be reused and sometimes cannot — ask for a measurement rather than an opinion.
Which axle
Front brakes do most of the work and wear first. Rear brakes can cost more on a car with an electronic parking brake that has to be retracted.
Parts quality
Original, quality aftermarket, or budget: the price gap is real and so is the difference in noise, dust and service life.
What has seized
In a province that salts its roads, a corroded calliper bolt or a stuck slide pin turns a straightforward job into a longer one. This is the usual reason a final bill exceeds the quote.

When an inspection is needed

If you have a noise but do not know its source, ask for a brake inspection rather than a specific part. It costs less than replacing the wrong component.

Common questions

Why do you not publish an average price?

Because it would be made up. We have no marketplace data yet, and a national average would be wrong for your vehicle in your city anyway. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than none: you would negotiate against it and we would have to defend it. What we can give you is real quotes for your actual car.

How do I compare two quotes properly?

Check that they cover the same work: the same parts quality, the same number of wheels or components, whether labour and taxes are included, and what happens if something seizes once it is apart. Two quotes hundreds of dollars apart are often quoting two different jobs.

How often do brakes need replacing?

It depends far more on how you drive than on the calendar. City driving with constant stopping wears pads several times faster than highway kilometres. Any garage quoting an interval without seeing the car is guessing.
