What does replacing brake rotors cost?

Rotors are where a brake quote grows, and also where the recommendation is most worth questioning. They are sometimes genuinely necessary and sometimes not.

What changes the price

We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.

Whether they actually need replacing
Every rotor has a minimum thickness stamped on it. Below that it must be replaced; above it, it may be fine. Ask for the measurement.
Rotor type
A plain rotor, a coated one that resists winter corrosion, and a drilled or slotted performance rotor are three quite different prices.
Pads at the same time
New rotors are always fitted with new pads. A quote for rotors alone is either incomplete or is reusing pads it should not.
Corrosion
A rotor rusted onto the hub after several salted winters takes real effort to remove. That labour is legitimate and it is why quotes differ between a coastal city and a dry one.

When an inspection is needed

A vibration under braking is the classic rotor symptom, but a seized calliper or worn suspension can cause the same feeling. Replacing rotors without finding out why brings the problem straight back.

Common questions

Why do you not publish an average price?

Because it would be made up. We have no marketplace data yet, and a national average would be wrong for your vehicle in your city anyway. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than none: you would negotiate against it and we would have to defend it. What we can give you is real quotes for your actual car.

How do I compare two quotes properly?

Check that they cover the same work: the same parts quality, the same number of wheels or components, whether labour and taxes are included, and what happens if something seizes once it is apart. Two quotes hundreds of dollars apart are often quoting two different jobs.

Can rotors be machined instead of replaced?

Sometimes, if there is enough thickness left. Many modern rotors are made thin enough that machining is not worth it, and plenty of garages no longer offer it. Ask which applies to your car.

Ask for the measured thickness, then compare what garages actually quote for your vehicle.
