What changes the price
We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.
- Oil specification and quantity
- Full synthetic to a manufacturer specification costs several times a conventional oil, and engines vary from about four litres to more than eight. Both are decided by the car, not the shop.
- The filter
- A cartridge filter with its own seals is more work than a spin-on canister. Some engines need a specific filter with no cheap equivalent.
- What else is included
- Some quotes include a multi-point check, topping up fluids and resetting the service interval. Others are the oil and nothing else.
- Advertised versus applicable
- A headline price is usually for a small engine on conventional oil. Ask what it is for your vehicle before you book.
When an inspection is needed
An oil change is the cheapest opportunity to have someone look underneath the car. If a garage reports a leak or a worn component, ask to be shown it.

Common questions
Why do you not publish an average price?
Because it would be made up. We have no marketplace data yet, and a national average would be wrong for your vehicle in your city anyway. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than none: you would negotiate against it and we would have to defend it. What we can give you is real quotes for your actual car.
How often should I change the oil?
Follow the manufacturer’s interval for your engine and your conditions, which is what the owner’s manual and the car’s own service reminder are for. Short trips in cold weather are hard on oil, so "severe service" intervals apply to more Canadian drivers than they think.
How do I compare two quotes properly?
Check that they cover the same work: the same parts quality, the same number of wheels or components, whether labour and taxes are included, and what happens if something seizes once it is apart. Two quotes hundreds of dollars apart are often quoting two different jobs.
