Car battery replacement

In Canada the battery is the part that fails most often, and almost always at the worst moment. It is also the part most often replaced unnecessarily: several other faults look very much like it.

Common symptoms

  • The engine turns over slowly, especially when cold.
  • It takes several attempts on some mornings.
  • The headlights dim at idle.
  • It starts after a jump and then goes flat again.
  • The battery warning light comes on while driving.

You do not need to know which one applies: describe what you notice and the garage will do the diagnosis.

What changes the price

We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.

The type the vehicle requires
Conventional, EFB or AGM. A start-stop vehicle needs AGM or EFB: fitting an ordinary battery costs less once and more thereafter.
Registering it with the car
Many recent vehicles must have the new battery registered. Without that the charging system treats it as old, and its life suffers.
Where it sits
Under the bonnet is quick. Under a seat, in the boot or behind a wheel arch changes the labour noticeably.

When an inspection is needed

Before replacing a battery under three years old, ask for a load test and a charging-system check. A battery that keeps going flat is often a symptom of something else.

Common questions

How do I know if it is the battery or the alternator?

A useful clue: if the car starts after a jump, drives normally, then will not restart later, the battery is the suspect. If the battery light comes on while driving, or the car stalls on the road, the alternator becomes the main suspect. A test settles it in minutes.

Can I fit a battery myself?

On many older vehicles, yes. On a recent car that requires registration with the charging system, fitting one without registering it shortens the part’s life — and some batteries are in awkward places.

Give us the year, make and model, and compare real offers rather than a generic range.

What we don't promise

We don't guarantee a number of offers, a response time, or a saving. We pass your request to garages and show you what they say. If nothing comes back, we'll tell you.
