What does a car battery replacement cost?

A battery looks like a commodity and is not. Two cars of the same age can need batteries at very different prices, and the reason is usually the car rather than the shop.

What changes the price

We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.

The type the car requires
Conventional flooded, EFB or AGM. A vehicle with start-stop generally requires AGM or EFB, and fitting a cheaper conventional battery shortens its life considerably.
Cold-cranking rating
In most of Canada this matters more than anywhere else. A battery sized for a mild climate will disappoint you in February.
Registration and coding
Many recent vehicles need the new battery registered with the charging system. Skipping it leads to chronic undercharging — and it is billable time.
Where it lives
Under the bonnet is quick. Under a seat, behind a wheel arch or in the boot is not.

When an inspection is needed

If the battery is only two or three years old, ask for the charging system and a parasitic drain to be checked. A battery that keeps dying is often a symptom rather than the fault.

Common questions

Why do you not publish an average price?

Because it would be made up. We have no marketplace data yet, and a national average would be wrong for your vehicle in your city anyway. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than none: you would negotiate against it and we would have to defend it. What we can give you is real quotes for your actual car.

How long should a battery last in Canada?

Less than the marketing suggests. Extreme cold and lots of short trips both shorten a battery’s life, so a unit that would last six years in a mild climate may manage three or four here. Any specific figure would be a guess about your driving.

How do I compare two quotes properly?

Check that they cover the same work: the same parts quality, the same number of wheels or components, whether labour and taxes are included, and what happens if something seizes once it is apart. Two quotes hundreds of dollars apart are often quoting two different jobs.

Tell us the year, make and model — the required battery type follows from that, and so does a meaningful quote.

What we don't promise

We don't guarantee a number of offers, a response time, or a saving. We pass your request to garages and show you what they say. If nothing comes back, we'll tell you.
