- The gap is large. An approved equivalent converter suits many vehicles; on some, only the original satisfies the engine computer.
- Built into the manifold or separate
- When the converter is part of the exhaust manifold, the repair becomes far heavier than replacing a section of pipe.
- The upstream cause
- Replacing a converter without fixing what destroyed it — misfires, oil consumption, a leaking injector — leads to replacing it twice.
- Corroded fasteners
- Rusted flanges and nuts get cut off rather than undone. That is time, and it is legitimate.

Before agreeing to a converter, ask what was checked upstream: oxygen sensors, leaks, misfires. This is the repair where confirmation is worth the most.

Can I drive with a failing converter?
Often yes in the short term, but a blocked converter chokes the engine and one breaking up internally can send debris further down the system. If the check engine light is flashing, it is better not to continue.
Why are converters stolen?
They contain precious metals, which makes them a target. If yours has been cut out the noise is immediate and unmistakable — and it is then an insurance claim as much as a repair.
