Wheel alignment

An alignment corrects the angle of the wheels relative to the road and to each other. It is inexpensive, it protects tyres that cost far more, and it is also one of the most frequently sold jobs that was not needed.

Common symptoms

  • The steering wheel is not straight when the car goes straight.
  • The car pulls to one side on a flat road.
  • The tyres wear more on one edge than the other.
  • It started behaving differently after a pothole or a kerb.

You do not need to know which one applies: describe what you notice and the garage will do the diagnosis.

What changes the price

We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.

Two wheels or four
Front-only costs less. Most modern cars with independent rear suspension need a four-wheel alignment to be correct.
What the factory left adjustable
Some vehicles offer little adjustment. Correcting those properly needs extra parts, which changes what the job is.
The condition of the parts
You do not align a car with a worn ball joint: the setting will not hold. An honest quote says so before charging for the alignment.

When an inspection is needed

An alignment is justified by a symptom or by visible wear, not by mileage. If a garage suggests one with no specific reason, ask what the reason is.

Common questions

Do I need an alignment after fitting new tires?

Not automatically. It is worth it if the old tyres wore unevenly, if the car pulls, or if suspension parts were just replaced. New tyres alone are not a reason.

How long does an alignment last?

Indefinitely, as long as nothing disturbs it — and one serious pothole is enough to disturb it. That is why spring is the busiest season for this job in most Canadian cities.

Give us the year, make and model, and compare real offers rather than a generic range.

What we don't promise

We don't guarantee a number of offers, a response time, or a saving. We pass your request to garages and show you what they say. If nothing comes back, we'll tell you.
