Car repair costs, and why quotes differ

There is no single price for a repair, and any site that gives you one is guessing about your car. What is genuinely useful is knowing which variables move the number — then getting quotes from garages for your actual vehicle.

What changes the price

We do not publish an average price: we do not yet have enough real data to give an honest one. Here is what makes up the bill instead.

The vehicle itself
The same job on two cars is two jobs. Parts prices differ, and so does how long it takes to reach the part — a component behind a subframe costs labour that the same component on another model does not.
Parts, and which grade
Original-manufacturer, quality aftermarket and budget parts can differ severalfold on the same repair. A cheaper quote is sometimes a cheaper part rather than a better deal, and it is a fair question to ask.
Labour time and the shop rate
Two numbers multiplied together: the hours the job is booked at, and what the shop charges per hour. Both vary between garages, and the hours vary between vehicles.
What else has to come apart
Seized fasteners, corrosion after Québec winters, and parts that have to be removed to reach the one being replaced. This is the most common reason a quote turns out to be a range rather than a figure.
Diagnosis, when the cause is not yet known
If the symptom could have several causes, somebody has to find out which. That is technician time and it is usually charged, though some garages credit it against the repair.
Related work found on the way
A garage replacing one worn component often finds a neighbouring one worn too. An honest quote says what it covers and what would be extra.

A reference point is not a quote

Reading that a repair "usually costs" something tells you whether a quote is in a plausible range. It cannot tell you whether it is right for your car, because it does not know your car. Treat an online figure as a sanity check and a garage quote as the actual answer.

Why two garages quote differently for the same job

Usually one of three reasons: they have priced different parts, they have booked different labour hours, or they are quoting different work — one included a component the other left out. Comparing the scope matters more than comparing the total.

When nobody can quote a price yet

Some problems cannot be priced without looking. A noise that could be three different components, or a warning light with several possible causes, needs a diagnosis first. A garage that says so is being straight with you, and it is a better answer than a confident number that changes later.

What a garage needs to know

  • The year, make and model — and the trim or engine if you know it
  • What you have noticed, in your own words
  • How long it has been happening, and whether it is getting worse
  • Any quote or diagnosis you already have

Common questions

Why does this site not show average repair prices?

Because we would have to make them up. FixMyCarQuote is new and has no body of quote data to average yet, and a national average would be wrong for your vehicle in your city regardless. A number nobody can stand behind is worse than none — you would negotiate against it. What we can do is get you real quotes for your actual car.

How is a quote different from an estimate I read online?

An online figure is a reference point built from other people’s cars. A quote is a garage looking at your year, make, model and the work you have described, and saying what they will charge. Only the second is something you can act on.

Is it free to request quotes?

Yes. You describe the vehicle and the repair, we pass the job to garages near you, and you decide what to do with the answers. There is no charge to you and no obligation to book.

Can a garage change the price after quoting?

A garage may quote a fixed price, a range, or say it needs to inspect the vehicle first — and we show you which of the three you have. A fixed quote should hold for the work described; a range or an inspection-first answer is telling you honestly that the final number depends on what they find.

Whatever the repair, the useful next step is the same: tell us the vehicle and what it is doing, and let garages near you answer with their own prices.

What we don't promise

We don't guarantee a number of offers, a response time, or a saving. We pass your request to garages and show you what they say. If nothing comes back, we'll tell you.
